Advisory Committees:  These are usually DFO-chaired committees bringing together fishermen, processors, scientists, fishery managers and federal and provincial officials to advise DFO on conservation and management.

Allowance:  An amount set aside from a TAC to allow for the expected catch of fish harvesters who are not subject to quota management.

CCPFH - Canadian Council of Professional Fish Harvesters:  This group is a national council organized to address the need for nationally-established programmes and standards for professional fish harvesters.

CCN - (Coastal Communities Network):  A network of community people concerned with the survival of Nova Scotia's coastal communities. This network is a committee that includes representatives from fishery organizations, churches, municipal leaders, women, educational organizations, economic development agencies, environmental groups and others. It is an open forum where concerned people meet to discuss and plan strategic actions.

CED : Community Economic Development

Co-management:  a process whereby management of the fishery is shared by both government and community organizations, with each having specific management responsibilities and authorities, but control of the overall process does not rest with one group.

DFO - (Department of Fisheries and Oceans):   A federal government department responsible for the protection and management of fish stocks and their habitat.

EA: - (Enterprise Allocation):  A quota from a certain species that is allocated to a company.

EFF - Eastern Fishermen's Federation:   A Maritime umbrella organization made up of inshore fishermen's organizations.

ESFPA - (Eastern Shore Fishermen's Protective Association):  Inshore fishermen's organization representing multi-species license holders on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, under the umbrella of the EFF.

FCC - (Fisheries Council of Canada):   Organization representing large fish-processing companies, including National Sea, Clearwater, Fishery Products International Ltd., SPANS (Seafood Producers Association of Nova Scotia) and others.

Fleet Separation:  A policy put in place to keep big companies from monopolizing the fishing industry. It means processing plants cannot be allotted quota; quota belongs to the boats.

FMO's - (Fisheries Management Orders)

FRCC - (Fisheries Resource Conservation Council):  A partnership of government, industry and the scientific community. Created in 1993 to act as an advisory board to the Minister of Fisheries.

Fundy North Fishers Association -  Inshore fish harvesters organization on the New Brunswick side of the Bay of Fundy.

FishNet:  A growing network of women in coastal communities who meet to address social issues brought on by ongoing changes in the fishery. Nova Scotia Women's FishNet is a non-government organization that operates mainly by volunteers.

GPI :   Genuine Progress Index (looks at the way economic activities really affect our lives)

Groundfish:  Species that are usually caught near the ocean's bottom, including cod, haddock, pollock, redfish, halibut, flounder, and other species.

HA :   Harbour Authorities

High Grading:  Discarding of fish that could have been sold, to make room for more valuable fish.

HRDA - (Halifax Regional Development Agency)

IQ: - (Individual Quota): > A quota allocated to an individual boat or licence.

ITQ - (Individual Transferable Quota): > An individual quota that is allocated to a boat or license holder that can be sold or traded.

LDA's - (Local Development Associations)

MFU - (Maritime Fishermen's Union):  A Maritime organization representing inshore fish harvesters made up of MFU Locals throughout the Maritimes.

Multi-Species -  Fish harvester with several licenses who directs fishing effort for different species at different seasons of the year.

NSDOF - (Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries):   A provincial government department responsible for the management of the fish processing sector and provincial legislation for the fishing industry including the current mandatory dues process.

Overfishing:  Generally, this means catching too much fish thus reducing the stock's biomass and putting future stocks in jeopardy.

Quota:  An amount of catch that one group of fishermen is permitted to take from a fish stock during a year. Quotas are broken down into separate quotas for fisheries by type of boat, by type of gear or by area.

RACAUL :   Regional Advisory Committee for Alternative Uses of Lighthouses.

Specialist -  Fish harvester with one license and directs all fishing effort toward catching one species.

SWNFGA - (South West Nova Fixed Gear Association):  Inshore fishing organization representing handliners, longliners and gillnetters. This organization is under the umbrella of the EFF.

TAC - (Total Allowable Catch):  This is the total tonnage of fish allowed to be caught from a particular fish stock in a given year.

Vertical Integration:  Is the system by which individual companies have business interests in all areas of the fishery from harvesting, to processing, to marketing.
